As an effective electrostatic water treatment product, the Ion Stick is a viable and economical alternative to chemical water treatment. Cooling tower systems are subjected to high water treatment costs, therefore the fastest payback is available in these system types.
By design, cooling towers use evaporation to reduce water temperature with the assistance of either induced or forced air flow. The scrubbing action created by the air-water contact generates a source for airborne contamination into the recirculated water. Evaporation increases the concentration of dissolved solids in the water. In order to avoid excessive dissolved solids which will cause precipitation, bleed-off control is administered to limit the least soluble salts from precipitating.
With a chemical program, the objective is to maintain a soluble form of the dissolved salts using chelating and sequestering agents.
Electrostatic water treatment provides a crystal distortion effect on the salt precipitant upon formation. The zeta potential (natural barrier to scale formation via repulsive electrical forces) of the particulates is increased to interact with any existing deposits in the system. Deposits tend to deteriorate as the positive electric charges are attracted to the increased negative charge (zeta potential) in the recirculated water. Normal water circulation helps to slough off the weakened deposit structure.
Regardless of the water treatment program type, filtration will enhance fouling protection. With effective filtration it is possible to reduce make up water consumption by increasing the cycles of concentration.

With Ion Stick use, the precipitants under the electrostatic influence will migrate to low flow areas (ie: tower basin) of the system. Eventually, the electrostatic effect will be nullified as the electrical equilibrium is offset by all the other electrical influences that constantly occur within the system. By removing the particulates via filtration there is no opportunity for scaling or deposition to occur. This is an unbeatable combination.
RECOMMENDATIONS
A. Filtration is highly recommended for shell and tube exchange designs where the water flows through the tubes.
B. Systems without filtration must be closely monitored to protect against suspended solids accumulation and microbiological fouling.
C. Bleed off control maintained via conductivity measurement to avoid oversaturation of silica, sulphates and excessive calcium hardness levels.
